What is O-ANON?

What is O-ANON?

O-Anon is a fellowship of friends and relatives of compulsive eaters/eating disordered people. O-Anon is not part of, but does work in cooperation with Overeaters Anonymous (OA).

In O-Anon we have found the compulsive overeater’s obsession with food and his or her related behaviors affect  the rest of the family and often on friends.  In O-Anon we discover that no situation is really hopeless, and that it is possible for us to find contentment and even happiness whether the disordered eater is in recovery or not.

Welcome to O-Anon!

Here you will find other people who understand what it is like to live with loved ones who are addicted to food.  We don’t realize how trying to force or manipulate our family member or friend into healthy eating drives us crazy.  We are powerless to stop the binges and/or purging. Without realizing it, we can become angry and frustrated.  The result is that our own lives become unmanageable even though we are not overeating.  In O-Anon we share our experience at meetings, person to person on the phone, or electronically between meetings.  Together we learn how to deal with these feelings through the O-Anon Twelve Steps. We learn what to do and, more importantly, what not to do in our relationships with the disordered eaters.

DO YOU BELONG IN O-ANON?

Here are a few statements paraphrased from O-Anon members.

Have you ever thought and/or had these behaviors noted in the statements below?

1. I have hidden food so the compulsive eater couldn’t eat it.

2. I have felt emotionally, physically and/or sexually “turned  off” by the behavior or appearance of the compulsive eater.

3. I get tired of constantly being on an emotional roller coaster and having to ‘walk on egg shells.’

4. I have sometimes thought: “Why can’t he or she just stop eating? It’s simple; I do it all the time; just use a little willpower.”

5. I sometimes feel threatened that if my compulsive eater gets thin and attractive, then he or she might leave me.

If you can relate to any of these statements, please email us at oanonfg@gmail.com or write us at General Service Office P.O. Box 34642  San Antonio, TX 78265. We will do our best to answer your questions and concerns.

We can send you literature (email or snail mail). One of us can call, write and/or email you. Then give you the specifics of our Saturday 4:00pm and Sunday 7:00pm (Eastern Time) meetings.
